The garage is where things go when nobody has decided what to do with them. Years later it's full of boxes, broken furniture, old paint and exercise equipment, and the car lives in the driveway. The good news is that a garage cleanout is very doable in a weekend if you go in with a plan.
Step one: book the haul first. It sounds backward, but scheduling your junk pickup before you start gives you a deadline and guarantees that everything you pull out actually leaves. The worst outcome of a cleanout is a pile in the driveway that sits there for three weeks.
Step two: set up four zones in the driveway — Keep, Donate, Sell, and Junk. Use tarps or sidewalk chalk. Everything that comes out of the garage goes into exactly one zone, and nothing goes back in until the floor is clear.
Step three: work from the door to the back wall, one section at a time. Start with the big, easy decisions — the broken treadmill, the crib nobody will use again, the stack of flattened boxes — so you see progress fast. Leave sentimental boxes for the end, when you've built some momentum.
Step four: pull out anything hazardous and set it apart. Old paint, motor oil, pool chemicals, pesticides and propane tanks can't go in a junk removal load. Group them together so they can go to household hazardous waste collection.
Step five: be honest about the Sell pile. If an item isn't worth the time it takes to photograph, list and meet a stranger, move it to Donate. A garage sale that never happens is just a second garage.
Step six: when the floor is clear, sweep it, knock down the cobwebs, and look at what's left before anything goes back in. Put shelving or wall hooks up now, while the space is empty — it's far easier than working around boxes later.
Step seven: let the haulers take the Junk pile and, if you like, the Donate pile too. We carry everything from the driveway or straight out of the garage, and we set aside usable items for donation where possible.
